Disciple!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 30, 2008 by bobgsmith

One of the most crucial parts of our ministry is to reproduce ourselves in every aspect.  The Pursuit Church will reproduce this fall and we will start our 2nd campus at Century Village.  Each one of the staff is investing their lives in people who will fill leadership positions in our churches.

Cv7922_3 Last weekend we had a Leadership Training Retreat.  Erin Diaz and myself shared some leadership principles with those who hope to lead Community Groups this fall.  Here is Matt, the lead Pastor, and Manny Cabeza trying to escape being tied up.  After lots of frustration, I told them how to get loose.  It’s so easy when you follow the instructions.

Manny is the guy I’m disciplining.  He is a real estate attorney, from Spain by the way of Cuba, plays guitar in the band, and really loves the Lord.  He and his family have been a blessing to our church.  I have lunch with him each week and we are enjoying getting to know one another and studying through the gospel of Matthew.

Sightseeing!

Linda and I haven’t done a lot of sight seeing, yet.  But when friends visit it’s a chance to check things out.  Dave and Sharon Johnson, church planters in Connecticut, visited we took a boat tour of the Miami Bay. Cv7895

Here is Miami from the water.  How can they build these skyscrapers so close to the water?  It’s really beautiful at night.

A condo overseeing the bay costs at least $2 million.

Cv7908 Or you can pick up a little home by the sea for around $35 million.

Lind and I are still looking for something that has the right color scheme.  You could live next the Shaq if you bought this little fixer-upper.

Come visit!

Many of you don’t know that if and when I have free time, I love to take pictures.  As I was looking through my archives I found couple that I thought I’d share.

Cup of Coffee

Posted in Uncategorized on July 22, 2008 by bobgsmith

09_16_4cupofcoffee_web1 I know this may offend some of you coffee gurus BUT I think I had my last cup on coffee in 1969.  It’s a long story but I gave up coffee and haven’t had a cup since, until last week………

Linda and I  were leaving the clubhouse at Century Village when we saw  our neighbor, Rachael (I wish I could type it with her Jewish accent.)  She was going to get on the trolley and ride home.  Well, we offered her a ride and let her off at the elevator of our building, telling her we were going out to eat.  Well, we changed our mind and decided to just go on up to the condo.  As we climbed the stairs we met Rachael – again.  We told her that we had changed our minds about eating – and she jumped into action.  She invited us into her condo and insisted on fixing us something to eat.  (Have you ever tried to tell a little Jewish lady, "No?" Let me save you some time, it can’t be done.)  Rachael fixed us a sandwich , some carrot cake and completed the meal with a cup of instant coffee. (Have I told you that I don’t drink coffee.)  As we ate, she recounted her early life in a concentration camp, the loss of most of her family, her escape to Israel and her renting her bridal gown for $3.  What a wonderful time we had hearing about her life.  So, I drank the coffee!

WHAT A LADY!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 16, 2008 by bobgsmith

Nel_barb One of the really hard things about moving to Florida was leaving Indiana, specifically Indianapolis which holds so much history for us.  Don’t get me wrong, Linda and I are totally convinced that God wants us here and we’re totally committed to being here. We love our Pursuit family! Let me explain.

When we first arrived at our Indy church, Traders Point CC, some 32 years ago, one of the elders who hired me was Nelson Roetter.  We immediately fell in love with the Roetters, Barbara and Nelson.  They were pillars of the church.  Because they had a son in the youth group and I was the newly hired youth minister we had lots of interaction over the years. When Nelson retired from his first career, he actually joined the staff of TPCC and he and I spent many years serving in ministry together. Who would’ve thunk it!

Sadly we just got word this past Sunday that dear Barbara graduated to "glory."  She lived her entire life for this moment, to be "absent from the body – at home with the Lord."  Linda and I have so many memories of this wonderful Godly woman and mother.

One summer day, when her youngest son Fred was coming home from an excursion he’d been on out west, Steve Kerr, my right-hand youth sponsor partner and I decided to ‘tee-pee’ the Roetter’s house in Fred’s honor. If you aren’t familiar with this nefarious activity it is usually done under the cover of darkness and involves "tinseling" every tree and bush available with dozens of rolls of toilet paper. However, Steve and I wanted it known who was doing this so we brazenly went in the middle of the day for everyone to see.  Barbara came out of the house, puzzled and asked what we were doing. You see, she’d heard about this kind of activity but had never seen it done before. It looked like so much fun she joined us in ‘decorating’ her own house to suprise her own son. She tripled the fun we all were having.

Another time I was put in charge of relationship building activities at an Elder-Deacons Retreat and one of the craziest stunts I enacted was one in which everyone was asked to exhibit trust by swinging from a rope knowing the "group" wouldn’t let them fall.  While some of the ladies felt skittish and a little unsure, sweet Barbara led the way and pulled herself up to hang on to that rope, the smile never fading from her face. She was a trooper.

Barbara was a great sportShe also had a huge heart that cared about others!  She truly stretched herself beyond her comfort zones when it meant seizing an opportunity to present the good news of the gospel to a neighbor or friend. She also was a great prayer warrior!  When I really needed prayer, I knew I could count on her to be on her knees for me.

One year TPCC decided to have a "Mother of the Year" contest. Can you guess who won? Of course…Barbara won!  She was a great mother not just to her kids but a great surrogate mom to a young and daring youth minister, who I personally know for a fact was immensly blessed to be adopted into "her family".

Like so many at TPCC, Linda and I already miss this wonderful Christian lady!  We missed not being able to be there with her in the most difficult and final days of her illness.  We miss not being there now to take part in her "graduation" ceremony and we miss not being there for Nelson.  But, unlike those who grieve without hope, we rejoice to know she is in a far, far better place and we confidently look forward to seeing her again!  I wonder if she will have those pearly gates "tee-peed" to surprise and welcome us home when the time is right! We hope so:) We love you Nelson and Barbara.

FULL CIRCLE

God certainly has a sense of humor!  Just look in the mirror – that’s got to make Him laugh.

Seriously, Dave & Sharon Johnson, an Elder at the Traders Point Church where I served as Missions Pastor, decided to move to Connecticut to start a church.  Traders Point got behind them -we sent teams of people there to  help them get started, prayed for them, I served on the Management Team, and supported them financially. They even named the church Colonial Point after the planting church.

Johnson_treeYesterday, we picked them up at the Miami Airport, had lunch, and then dropped them off at the Carnival Cruise line.  Here they are under a huge banyan tree at Bayside Market.  They are taking a cruise to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.  YEA!!!  We plan to spend some more time with them on Friday when they get back.

Guess what?  Now Colonial Point supports Linda and I as we help start The Pursuit Christian Church (TPCC – get the connection?) We’ve come full circle.  Our daughter church helps plant another daughter church.

Dave and Sharon are dear friends and it was good to catch up and "laugh out loud" about how God works.

FUN DAY on SUNDAY!!

Posted in Uncategorized on July 13, 2008 by bobgsmith

I like to preach!  I had a FUN today as I filled in for Matt who was preaching at one of our supporting churches.  He and Janie were missed!  With a church that runs 69, our attendance today, everyone who is not there is missed.  I took the attendance from memory (it’s as short as my hair.)

Today, I preached from I Corinthians 7.  The title of my sermon was "Living in Peace."  Paul talks about a lot of different types of relationships but God wants every relationship we have to bring contentment into our lives.  Some hard teachings in this chapter but it is so comforting to say, "Not what I think but what the Bible says."  I love the way we announce a scripture and people turn to it.  Arie was sitting in the front row (she’s a new Christian and doesn’t know she is suppose to sit in the back) and I saw her underlining the passages as I preached from them.

The BIG IDEA was, "We are good news to SoFlo when we are at peace with God and with others."

Linda and I had our first visitor from Century Village come with us to church today.  Julie, is one of our poker buddies and she is attending Linda’s summer Women’s Bible Study.  She was amazed at how many people came up, said they were glad that she came, and invited her back.  She felt right "at home." We went to lunch and she told us that her son who lives in town was gone for the weekend.  She said she usually gets depressed when he is gone but this weekend she had ‘us’.

I wonder how many other lonely people there are in Century Village.

Hope you had a FUN Day this Sunday.

Women’s Summer Bible Study

Posted in Uncategorized on July 9, 2008 by bobgsmith

LbsToday was one of those "red letter" days for our ministry at Century Village.  Linda held the first of a seven week Bible Study held in our home.  The study is based on Andy Stanley’s book, "Since no one is perfect, how good is good enough."  She worked hard writing this study and it was good to see the results.  She had a total of nine ladies, two from our poker group, two from the Ebony Club, two from the Friday Night Bible Study and two saw the notice on the bulletin board.  Three others plan to attend next week.  All these groups are ones where she has spent time developing relationships.  We hope that some of these ladies will be part of our core group in starting the church here.

I’m proud of Linda, the gifts God has given her, and her dedication in using them for Kingdom work.

Pursuit Members

Yesterday, our Pursuit peeps helped at the Broward County Outreach Center as they held "Christmas in July."   Pictured above is one of our newest friends and one of our oldest friends.  Arie is the first lady that I baptized after we started the Pursuit and Uncle Sam (Paul Smoot) was in our small group back at Traders Point.  You may notice that Arie is holding  a fan in one hand and a bottle of water in the other – there is a reason for that.

We joined hundreds of others at this celebration.  Raul & Alex gave a mini-concert, Paul was Uncle Sam, Matt & Janie were the hit of the day as ‘Mr & Mrs Claus’.  Food was served, clothes given out with "Hope Totes", massages were given, and some medical needs were met.   While those in the costumes experienced the heat, especially Santa (Matt gets extra kudos for that) many of the homeless sat in the sun and enjoyed this first annual "Christmas in July."

It was just one more way for the Pursuit Church to say to our community we love them as we served them.
